EAB: Cause for Concern?

It is almost impossible lately to discuss the tree care element of Grass Masters without addressing the Emerald Ash Borer, and its potential impact on local Ash trees in urban and rural environments.
The destructive little bug has rapidly chewed its way to the top of America's Most Feared Pest, and not entirely without reason; untreated, the rapidly reproducing borer will voraciously devour its way through countless acres of trees, leaving dead and critically injured Ash in its wake as it spreads slowly westward.
What then, can be done? As research shows, plenty.
Sensationalistic news reports aside, a majority of EAB researches agree that wholesale eradication of non-affected trees, or trees not in the immediate range, (approximately 15 miles, according to scientists at Purdue University), is counter-productive, and needlessly implemented.
Even in the event that EAB does make its presence known in our area, the same researchers advocate an individual assessment of the affected tree or trees before removal is recommended. Otherwise healthy trees, with only mild to moderate EAB damage apparent, are remarkably resilient, and frequently able to withstand some damage with little lasting effect. More heavily damaged trees can benefit from the application of insecticides, either via a trunk spray, bark injection, or aerial application.
Chemical control, which may be utilized preventatively before the arrival of EAB, or once it has been positively identified in your area, is a proven alternative to tree removal, and certainly more consistent with the basics of integrated pest management.
In the war on EAB, we would do well to keep in mind that the goal is eradication of the borer, not eradication of the tree.
Grass Masters is currently working to stay ahead of the EAB, both in terms of understanding the insect, its progress, and its treatment. It is our position to advocate patience, and to encourage our clients not to rush to a hasty judgement; as part of our commitment to quality care, all of our clients will be advised when EAB has been positively identified in their area, and our professional staff will work with each to determine the most appropriate course of action.
